STATEMENT FROM THE CHAIR UKIBC- SIR MARK TULLY – 1935 – 2026

By Trisha Nagpal

It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the death of Sir Mark Tully who passed this morning – 25th January 2026 – in New Delhi at the age of 90 years.

Sir Mark was for many years the BBC’s correspondent/ broadcaster in South Asia articulating sensitive, and objective observations over this period of the re-emergence of India as a leading global power.

For those fortunate to have known him, he was generous of his time and unfailingly polite.
Some may have seen him “old school”. I would disagree. I remember him very fondly as a man who was deeply insightful- a true Titan of his craft …. and a man who, above all, very much cared about India and its people.

My sympathies and those of my colleagues go to his family at this time.

-Richard Heald OBE | Chair UKIBC
