UK India Business Council Skills Delegation to India 2013 – New Delhi and Mumbai

By Kealan Finnegan

For four consecutive years, the UKIBC has taken an annual delegation of UK skills providers to India for a week of activities focused on the education sector, timed around the month of September to attend the well-known flagship FICCI skills summit.

This year, the UKIBC is planning to make two projects we are currently working on the main focus of the skills delegation: our work in Odisha and South Mumbai, and a new project we are in the process of developing in Lavasa. This will be helpful in the lead up to inviting expressions of interest for the delivery of these projects later on.

The greenfield project in Odisha and an urban regeneration project in South Mumbai are being developed in partnership with the Tata Group and will shortly be opened to organisations from across the UK’s technical and vocational education sector. This year’s UKIBC skills delegation will provide an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into the projects and help inform subsequent expressions of interest. To learn more, please read our sector view from May which discusses it in more detail.

As for the project development in the planned city of Lavasa, Lavasa Corporation, a subsidiary of the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), has sent an expression of interest to tie up with the UKIBC for the setting up of a hospitality management institute. Lavasa is India’s first fully-planned city in the state of Maharashtra, and is spread across 25,000 acres. To cope with the city’s rapid growth and new businesses, the city has placed great importance on skills development. The UKIBC is currently in discussions to partner with Lavasa Corp and set up a consortia of UK skills providers to deliver the project. Lavasa Corp is also open to discuss synergies and models that would help position the city as an upcoming education and tourism hub.

6th FICCI Global Skills Summit 2013

This year’s FICCI Global Skills Summit will be a blend of macro discussions around policy changes and implementation, as well as testing of practical tools through master workshops and programmes. We expect a strong emphasis on the various aspects of skills development and the role of international partners, especially on the last mile connectivity, demonstrating how to scale skills development programmes to India’s needs. The Summit will provide a platform to showcase the latest developments in the skills sector both locally and globally, and a special B2B session will allow for quality interactions between international service providers and Indian companies. Highlights of the Skills Delegation week will include:

  • An exclusive roundtable with Mr S Ramadorai, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Skills Development and Chairman of the National Skills Development Agency (NSDA).
  • A presentation on the skills requirements of Jajpur district from Tata Steel. Tata Steel are planning a £3 billion improvement of their steel production facilities in Odisha and are keen to work with UK organisations on developing the related training infrastructure.
  • A roundtable meeting with Lavasa Corporation in Mumbai to discuss abundant business opportunities for skills providers in the upcoming city of Lavasa
  • Attendance to the FICCI Global Skills Summit – the largest skills focused trade show of its kind in India.

The delegation will take place on the week of 2nd September. Places are limited so please register your interest to avoid disappointment.
