Expanded opportunities for foreign universities to set up campuses in India under UGC notification

By Kealan Finnegan

UKIBC welcomes the UGC’s notification on allowing foreign universities to set up their campuses in India. In particular, we are delighted to see that the ranking criteria on which universities will be allowed to enter India takes cognisance of subject rankings and excellence. This will enable Indian students to access the world’s best courses on campuses at home in India. This has been a long-standing ask of UKIBC on behalf of our member universities, working with and in support of the UGC and wider Government.

UKIBC Managing Director Kevin McCole said: “This announcement is both timely and hugely significant as it opens a new route for UK universities to enter India, over time, and meet the large and growing demand from aspirational, ambitious young Indians for top quality education. In anticipation of this announcement and in recognition of earlier UGC announcements about the internationalisation of Indian HE, we at the UKIBC are preparing a report, based on extensive consultation with institutions in both countries, that will showcase to UK and Indian universities successful transnational education partnerships. We look forward to launching the report in early 2024 and to working with institutions to form the partnerships that will deepen the UK-India education relationship, accelerate the internationalisation of Indian HE, and increase access to world leading courses for Indian students.”
