UK-India Trade in Services: Opportunities and Challenges

|

The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and the UKIBC are organising a roundtable discussion for the UK’s Department of International Trade study titled, “Prospects for UK-India Trade in Services: Assessment of Opportunities and Challenges.” The aim of this study is to identify opportunities as well as challenges to increasing bilateral services engagement between India and the UK. The sectors identified for the study include: (1) IT and IT-enabled services; (2) wholesale and retail trade and distribution services; (3) logistics services; (4) audiovisual, broadcasting and publishing services; and (5) miscellaneous other business services, including, engineering, technical, scientific, space, business and management consulting, R&D, market research, advertising, public opinion and operational leasing services.

The roundtable is organised to present the findings from interviews with companies in order to validate as well as to better understand the nature of the opportunities and barriers in the identified services, including segments and activities where there is potential to expand bilateral relations. The roundtable aims to assess the impact of the barriers on the entry and operations of UK firms, the benefits to be derived on both sides from their liberalisation and the steps that could be taken to address these barriers in order to increase bilateral engagement in services.
